Carbon fiber roof for BMW M2 Competition still planned for 2019
The M 135i carbon fiber roof Performance Parts catalog for the BMW M2 Competition is larger than ever before. Owners of the popular compact M car are spoiled when it comes to carbon fiber parts for their cars, from carbon fiber bumpers to side mirrors and diffusers, there is a little bit of everything for everyone. Yet, there is one carbon fiber part that’s more interesting than your “usual suspects” – the carbon fiber roof.
The carbon fiber roof which is now part of the M Performance Parts program does have a different design than the standard roof, made of visible varnished carbon fiber with approx. 5 kg weight savings. When the part was announced in 2018, BMW M also mentioned if you want the carbon fiber roof, your BMW dealer/service shop will be the one to remove the standard metal roof and then install the lightweight roof.
Of course, with these news, there have been plenty of skeptics whether dealerships have the proper training and knowledge to achieve this. Installing the part at the BMW Vehicle Distribution Center (port) is not an option due to the intensive labor work, so it will eventually come down to the techs at your dealer to perform it.
Unfortunately, 135i carbon fiber roof there are still no news on when the carbon fiber roof arrives in the US, and how the installation process will be handled, but we’ve reached out to BMW of North America for more information. What we’ve learned is that the Germany launch is still planned for July 2019, while the US market is still on target for a 2019 release, which is likely to occur after the July European launch. According to the folks at BMW of North America, the launch is contingent on several tests that still need to be performed.
For now, BMW 135i carbon fiber roof has given us a closer look at the their M Performance Parts for the M2 Competition with the expose carbon fiber and we’ve had the chance to already test drive a prototype.
BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe Goes On A Diet With Carbon Fiber Roof
The M Carbon roof option replaces the big glass panel and brings the M850i that much closer to an M8 Gran Coupe
The BMW 8 135i carbon fiber roof Series Gran Coupe may be a lot of things – stylish, luxurious, even fast – but one thing it’s not is light of weight. Even in base 840i spec, the thing weighs a portly 4,262 pounds, or as much as 4,758 lbs in top M850i xDrive form. That’s more than twice the weight of a Mazda MX-5 Miata. But there are things you can do to make it lighter.
In a series of updates announced across its lineup for the fall, BMW has introduced the option of a carbon-fiber roof panel on the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe.
We don’t know how much the M Carbon roof weighs, or more to the point, how much less it weighs than the standard glass roof panel. But you can bet that it represents a substantial weight savings – and right where it counts. Fitting the carbon roof panel, as BMW has on an array of its M-fettled coupes in the past, reduces mass at the top of the vehicle, farthest away from the wheels, where it’s most likely to affect the vehicle’s roll in the corners, as well as its pitch and dive under acceleration and braking.
The roof panel 135i carbon fiber roof is one of a series of carbon-fiber components available for the 8 Series Gran Coupe. The M Performance Parts catalog for the sleek four-door also includes mirror housings, front and side grilles, and an array of interior trim pieces, all crafted from the lightweight woven material.
At present the M850i xDrive 135i carbon fiber roof is the top version of the Gran Coupe on offer, but you can bet there’ll be an M8 Gran Coupe soon to follow with the more potent powertrain (and other upgrades) already featured in the M8 coupe and convertible. And when it does, you can rest assured that it’ll include even more carbon-fiber pieces – from the roof on down.
