Audi A4 Avant (2008 – 2015) review
The A4 Avant is available with a wide choice of engines, including a range of refined and economical diesels. They come in 2.0-litre, 2.7-litre and 3.0-litre versions. The 2.0-litre engines strike an excellent balance between performance and economy. The bigger 3.0-litre versions are best suited to those who really need the additional power, or need to tow trailers or carry lots of equipment.
Audi a4 b8 dynamic turn signal petrol engine options utilise technology like direct injection and turbocharging to help boost economy and improve emissions. This doesn’t mean the petrol options are sluggish performers, however. The 2.0-litre TFSI, for example, is claimed to average 40mpg yet it will accelerate the A4 Avant from 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds.
Several trim levels are on offer, ranging from entry-level ‘Standard Trim’ models up to the range-topping ‘Black Edition’. All are well equipped, meaning that even the entry level model is a sensible proposition. It comes with features like climate control, electric windows and alloy wheels. As ever there’s a long options list and you should choose carefully.
They can quickly become a significant part of your final bill and some will not add any value to your car when you come to sell. Options that are worth looking out for are things like the Parking System Plus and DAB digital radio. These help make the car easier to live with.
Buyers can also pick from advanced accessories like Audi Drive Select, which allows you to fine-tune the car’s driving characteristics, and Audi Lane Assist. That warns you if you deviate out of your lane while driving. A host of other modern features are available but do remember to keep an eye on the cost of all the options.
The Audi A4 is interesting in that it is available in a range of different body styles. Besides the Avant version, buyers can also pick from a saloon, convertible, an off-road capable ‘Allroad’ model and numerous high-performance versions. Audi A4 Avant (2008 – 2015) practicality
The A4 was awarded a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating for occupant protection in the more stringent tests introduced in 2009. That’s good for this type of car, but not out of the ordinary. It also gets all the safety features you’d expect with a minimum of six airbags, electronic stability control and anti-whiplash head restraints.
Optional safety features include adaptive cruise control (which maintains a set distance with the vehicle in front), a system that warns the driver when another vehicle is in the blindspot and a lane-departure warning system that vibrates through the steering wheel if the car crosses a line on the road without indicating.
There are Audi a4 b8 dynamic turn signal Isofix child seat mounting points on the outer rear seats, and additional points on the front passenger seat can be specified at no extra cost.
The boot is a decent size (490 litres with the seats up and 1,430 with them folded down) and easily large enough for a family of four. The seats also split and fold flat for a very large load area plus there’s an optional ‘Storage Pack’ – straps in the back to help stop items such as shopping from rolling around. A load area mat is another extra – it’s reversible – one side is carpet, while the other is wipe-clean and ideal for dogs or muddy boots.
Up front there are cupholders, a large glovebox and door bins big enough for one-litre bottles. An electrically operated tailgate is also available.
