Performance and Fuel Economy
Every A6 variant includes Audi’s Quattro AWD system. The basic A6 engine, badged 45 TFSI, is a 2.0-liter turbo-four producing 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. It’s connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
A Audi a6 button sticker turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 is featured on A6 sedans badged 55 TFSI, and the Allroad. Output measures 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, aided by a 48-volt mild-hybrid electrical system. This engine also uses a seven-speed dual-clutch. In MotorTrend testing, this A6 sedan went from 0-60 mph in 5.0 seconds. Fuel economy is 22/29 mpg for the sedan and 20/26 for the Allroad.
The sporty S6 gets a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 enhanced by a 48-volt electrical system, good for 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. It’s connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Audi estimates the S6’s 0-60 mph time at 4.4 seconds. Fuel economy measures 18/28 mpg.
Like the RS6 of the early 2000s, the 2021 model gets a twin-turbo V-8. It’s now a 4.0-liter unit paired to a 48-volt electrical system, blasting out 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic. When we tested the biggest, baddest Audi wagon, it reached 60 mph in 3.1 seconds.
The 2020 A6 earned a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick + designation, and the 2021 model should be just as safe. The IIHS gave the 2020 A6 the top Good score in every crashworthiness test, along with the top Superior score for its standard automatic emergency braking system. The LED headlights on higher-end A6 trims get a Good score, the highest, but the standard units get an Acceptable score, the second-highest rating. The newest A6 hasn’t been tested by the NHTSA.
All A6 trims have forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams as standard. Higher-end trims get rear and side cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition, and lane keep assist.
Cargo Space and Interior Room
Cargo space in the A6 sedan’s trunk measures 13.7 cubic feet, and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats help larger items fit inside.
Front-row headroom measures 38.0 inches, which compares to 37.3 inches in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan. Second-row headroom is 38.1 inches in the Audi, just less than 38.2 inches in the Mercedes. The A6’s front-row legroom of 41.3 inches is a bit less than the E-Class’ 41.7 inches. Second-row legroom is greater in the A6, though, at 37.4 inches to the E-Class’ 36.2.
The Audi a6 button sticker Allroad’s wagon body increases cargo capacity to 30.0 cubic feet behind the second row, which folds in a 40/20/40 split for more cargo space. Headroom also increases compared to the sedan, to 38.2 inches up front and 39.5 inches behind; legroom is unchanged. Cargo and passenger space in the RS6 Avant should be similar to the A6 Allroad.
Every A6 trim includes a dual-touchscreen infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, built-in navigation, and for 2021, an integrated toll transponder. A6 Premium models have 8.8-inch upper and 8.6-inch lower touchscreens, plus a 7.0-inch information display between the analog gauges.
Premium Plus and Prestige models include a 10.1-inch upper touchscreen and a 12.3-inch all-digital gauge display. These trims also have a 360-degree view parking camera system and wireless device charger. Every trim has USB ports in each row of seats. The standard audio system has 10 speakers, and a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium system is included on Premium Plus and Prestige models.
